On Monday, May 13, 2024, the “Women Talks on Communications” event took place at the Auditorium of Universitas Tarumanagara in Jakarta, Indonesia. Organized by the IEEE Indonesia Section, IEEE WIE Indonesia Section, IEEE ComSoc Indonesia Chapter, and Universitas Tarumanagara, the event attracted 125 participants and featured distinguished speakers from various countries.
The event was hosted by Dr. Nur Afny, Chair of the WIE AG Indonesia section and faculty member at Binus University. The opening remarks were delivered by Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, M.Sc, the Director General of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia. This was followed by addresses from Prof. Ir. Gamantyo Hendrantoro, M.Eng, Ph.D, Chair of the IEEE Indonesia Section, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Agustinus Purna Irawan, Rector of Universitas Tarumanagara.
A special guest speaker, Prof. Emeritus Lance Fung, IEEE R10 Director, gave a compelling presentation on “Women in Communications: To Serve, To Lead, and To Influence,” concluding with the powerful message that “communication is power”.
The keynote speaker session, moderated by Cutifa Safitri, Ph.D., IEEE ComSoc Indonesia Chapter Officer and faculty member at President University, was both inspiring and engaging. Dr. Agnes Irwanti (TVRI Supervisory Board, Chair of WIE IEEE R10) presented “Transforming Broadcast Media: Navigating the Digital Landscape”. Next, Assoc. Prof. Lely Hiryanto, Ph.D. (Universitas Tarumanagara) discussed “Decision Optimization for Augmentative and Alternative Communication Applications”. Lastly, Dr. Anna Christina Situmorang (Ministry of Communication and Informatics Republic of Indonesia – IEEE ComSoc Indonesia Chapter Officer) spoke on “Spectrum Pricing: Indonesia Policy Update and IEEE Research Status”. These presentations highlighted the significant roles of women in industry, academia, and government in Indonesia. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment.
Closing remarks were delivered by Prof. Takako Hashimoto, IEEE R10 Director-elect and Professor at Chiba University of Commerce, who also serves as a research fellow at the University of Tokyo. She outlined future plans for IEEE Region 10 and Region 11, focusing on fostering stronger connections, enhancing knowledge exchange, and supporting collaborative innovation across regions.
The event concluded with a group photo session featuring the speakers and participants. The success of the event was attributed to the insightful contributions of the speakers, the active participation of the attendees, and the efforts of Universitas Tarumanagara.
