DLP IEEE ComSoc x IEEE VTS x Udayana University: AI/ML-Aided Sustainable IoT for Smart Environments

On Tuesday, May 20th, 2025, IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc), IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS), and IEEE Student Branch Udayana University jointly organized a distinguished lecture titled:

“AI/ML-Aided Sustainable IoT for Smart Environments: Theory and Technology Development”

Held in a hybrid format from 13:00 to 16:00 WITA, the event took place both onsite at Meeting Room II, Dean Building, Faculty of Engineering, Udayana University, Bukit Jimbaran Campus, and online via Zoom. The session featured Prof. Swades De from IIT Delhi as the keynote speaker and was moderated by Dr. Ngurah Indra ER of Udayana University.

This lecture explored the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) with the Internet of Things (IoT) to support the development of sustainable smart environments. Prof. De presented a comprehensive overview of theoretical models, recent innovations, and technology implementations that enable intelligent and energy-efficient decision-making in smart systems. Topics included adaptive sensing, data-driven automation, sustainable resource management, and infrastructure planning using AI/ML-enhanced IoT frameworks. The presentation drew attention to real-world use cases and research opportunities in both urban and rural contexts, opening insightful discussions on how AI and IoT can synergize to solve complex environmental challenges.

The event attracted a total of 121 participants, consisting of 60 IEEE members and 61 non-IEEE participants, including students, academics, and professionals from various institutions across Indonesia. Attendees joined both physically and virtually, reflecting a growing national interest in cutting-edge topics such as sustainable technology, smart systems, and interdisciplinary innovation.

Throughout the session, participants actively engaged in the Q&A session, where questions ranged from algorithm optimization to ethical considerations in AI-powered decision-making. The discussion highlighted not only the technical depth of the topic but also its real-world relevance and cross-disciplinary potential.

The lecture concluded with closing remarks from the moderator, emphasizing the importance of collaborative academic efforts in advancing sustainable smart technologies. The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge exchange, strengthened the role of IEEE Student Branch Udayana University as a hub for emerging technology discourse, and fostered new networks for future research collaboration.
